  • [0:10] Intro

Hi, thank you for joining us for the Human Library video series. In this series, we borrow people from the community, hear their stories, and showcase the diverse possibilities that are available in our community.

Today we are joined by Jake Davey, artist and producer. Today we will hear more about Jake's journey and the skills that he's used—such as creativity, consistency, and passion—to get to where he is today.

[0:35] What does your professional life look like currently?

I have a healthy balance between artist, singer-songwriter and music, and production: audio, video, photography. That keeps me pretty busy!.

[0:46] Can you name and describe a skill that has helped you get to this point?

For sure. It's a mix of passion, consistency, and just being willing to be flexible in business, try new things, and just trust the process.

[1:02] Looking back, can you think of a time when you have used this skill to reach your goal?

Every day of my life, absolutely. Obviously, when you're young and starting a business, it's always a little scary. So you’ve got to be willing to take risks and dive in the deep end. But I think all those skills resonate each day with me, and you just have to believe in yourself and keep pushing on.

I think at this point in my career, it's all about taking things to a whole other level. I've been able to be self-employed for the past probably ten years, and now things are getting pretty crazy. So I need to push extra hard to take things to another level.

On the artist stuff, I'm definitely aiming to play at bigger festivals, tour, sell more tickets and stuff like that, get more streaming numbers. And then with the production space, work with higher-profile artists in the country music scene, help them build their careers as well with the audio and video production side of things.

Once again, it's a healthy mix. It keeps me interested, and every day is different.

[2:01] What do you love about your professional or personal life now?

My favorite part about my life is that I get to help people achieve their dreams—as well as my own. Like I said, every day is different. Every day brings new challenges, but the results are really, really satisfying. So if you stick to something and believe in yourself, you too can see those results.

[2:22] What do you think this says about the values that are important to you?

I’d say all of those things I mentioned earlier. If you stick it out and stay true to yourself, you will see results. Good things take time. You've got to be patient with yourself, but hang in there and you'll reap the benefits.

[2:38] What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

Once again, be willing to be flexible. Things might not always turn out exactly like you planned—they might turn out better.

[2:49] And what would it mean for your younger self to hear this?

He would have just said, “I got this, leave me alone.”

[2:56] Would it have meaning? Do you think your younger self would have taken this in?

Yeah, absolutely. I think growing up, especially in my late teens, kind of leaving high school and figuring out what I wanted to do, I was definitely always listening to my mentors and new people who would come into my life and give me advice. I think that’s essential to being successful—especially at a young age. So all those things continue to ring true today. And I think it's very important to remain teachable as well. I love that kind of saying.
